Stroke is often referred to as the “silent thief” because it can happen without warning, leaving devastating consequences in its wake. Unlike other health conditions that may give warning signs, stroke can occur suddenly and silently, making it difficult to detect.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, either due to a blockage or bleeding in the brain. Due to an interrupted supply of oxygen-rich blood to the brain, the brain cells start degenerating; thus, depending upon the severity and site of injury, the stroke can lead to paralysis, speech difficulties, memory loss and even death. However, awareness and appropriate treatments on time can significantly improve the chances of survival and reduce the risk of long-term complications.
