A hair transplant procedure is a highly specialized type of facial plastic surgery used to treat scalp hair loss, generally caused by androgenic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness.

The hair transplant surgeon reconstructs the hairline and fills the balding area of the scalp. Each hair follicle must be implanted with precision into the scalp to produce very congruent angulation while simultaneously ensuring each FUE graft of transplanted hair is handled with extreme care so that each newly transplanted hair graft will grow and produce completely natural-looking healthy hair growth on the thinning or bald area of the scalp.

Also, it is essential to note that the term hair implants and also the term hair cloning is often conflated with a hair transplant procedure; please note that they are not the same procedure or even a part of the procedure, and we do not currently advise anyone undertake either of these procedures.

• Donor dominance is the theory of genetics; it indicates that a transplanted hair follicle will retain all of its genetic characteristics, colour, thickness, and texture, including resistance or immunity to DHT (Dihydrotestosterone), the hormone responsible for hair loss.

Approximately $3,500 for a facial hair transplant, and depending on whether you are have an FUE procedure or an FUT procedure, the prices in the Greater Toronto Area can range as high as $15,000 for an extensive FUE hair transplant procedure. FUT (strip) procedures are generally 10% – 20% less expensive because they do not require as much time and manual labour as a FUE procedure.

The price can vary by approximately 10% from patient to patient due to individual factors. However, generally speaking, that is our average hair transplant price for patients of our clinic in the Greater Toronto area.

Do you offer financing?

Medical financing is available to Sure Hair International patients in Canada from a few private financial institutions. Sure Hair International does not offer hair transplant financing directly to the public. However, we have aligned ourselves with some oft the top medical financing companies available to assist our patients with their financing needs.

For the vast majority, hair transplant surgery is an elective procedure and not part of reconstructive surgery, which means the costs must be covered by the patient and not by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

The only exception is when the procedure is part of reconstructive surgery from an accidental injury or disfigurement that could potentially qualify for coverage by OHIP or a private medical insurance plan.

Most private health insurance plans also do not cover the costs for any elective cosmetic surgery such as hair transplants. When the procedure is elective, the patients must cover the costs.

The only exception is when the procedure is part of reconstructive surgery from an accidental injury or disfigurement that could potentially qualify for coverage by OHIP or a private medical insurance plan.

• It is very important to understand that a hair transplant will not prevent further loss of genetically susceptible hair.

The hair transplant surgeon will anaesthetize the entire scalp and begin by removing donor hair grafts from the back of the head, either as a strip of hair or as individual hair follicle grafts. Each graft will be carefully dissected and implanted in the bald area of the scalp.

Each graft is implanted with very specific angulation and density consistent with the patient’s own naturally growing hair.

Each graft of transplanted hair is handled with extreme care so that each new hair graft will produce completely natural-looking healthy hair growth on the bald area of the scalp skin once the patient heals from the surgery and the new grafts begin growing, which is generally three months post-op.

There are two main types of hair transplant surgery, follicular unit extraction, commonly referred to as FUE hair transplants, and Follicular unit transplantation commonly referred to as a FUT or strip hair transplant. Others, such as the Neograft hair transplant and the ARTAS robotic hair transplant, are variations of the FUE hair transplant, simply using branded names to differentiate the procedures along with branded medical equipment.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) works by extracting a singular follicular unit from the back of the scalp one at a time and transplanting it to the area of hair loss.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) works by surgically removing a strip of hair-bearing scalp skin from the back of the head, dissecting it into individual follicular units using a stereoscopic microscope and transplanting the dissected grafts to the area of hair loss.

At Surehair, we offer both FUT and FUE hair transplant procedures.

Approximately 98 per cent of the time, hair transplants work very well. As with any surgical procedure, there is always a risk of failure. However, as reported by hair transplant surgeons, data collected indicates the success rate is approximately 98 per cent, so they have an excellent probability of success.

Further, a 2016 study indicates that even in hair transplant candidates who typically get a sub-optimal to poor hair transplant regrowth rate, intra-operative plasma therapy helps 75% or more of the transplanted grafts grow fully mature hairs.
