Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to help you understand your next legal steps
How do I know if I need a family lawyer?
If you’re separating, managing custody, or dividing property, a lawyer helps clarify your rights and risks. Even if things seem amicable, legal advice helps prevent costly mistakes. Early clarity often avoids later disputes and protects your long-term interests.
While you don’t need a lawyer to file documents, the law isn’t always intuitive. A brief consultation can reveal blind spots—especially when children or major assets are involved.
What happens during a free case review?
We listen first. You explain your situation, goals, and concerns. We then explain the legal context, possible next steps, and what to expect if you proceed. You leave the meeting informed, not pressured.
This isn’t a sales call. It’s a conversation designed to help you decide how to move forward. If you choose to hire us, we’ll walk through what that relationship looks like from day one.
How long does a divorce usually take?
An uncontested divorce in Ontario often takes four to six months, depending on court volume and paperwork accuracy. If there are disputes over custody, support, or property, timelines vary.
The more issues you can resolve early, the faster and more affordably the process moves. Whether simple or complex, we help manage the steps clearly and professionally.
Do I need a will if I’m young?
Yes. A will isn’t about age—it’s about direction. If you have children, own property, or want to choose who manages your estate, a will gives clear instructions and avoids confusion later.
Without one, Ontario law decides who inherits, which may not reflect your wishes. It also protects loved ones from unnecessary court delays or disputes during a difficult time.
What’s the difference between mediation and court?
Mediation is a private way to reach agreement with the help of a neutral third party. Court involves formal hearings where a judge makes binding decisions. Mediation often leads to faster, more personalized outcomes.
That said, not every situation is right for mediation—especially when there’s a power imbalance or safety concerns. We help you weigh your options based on your goals and situation.

Family Law in Toronto: What You Need to Know
What Is a Family Law Lawyer?
Family lawyers are involved in the personal aspects of their clients’ lives, including divorce, child custody (now decision-making responsibility and parenting time), alimony, abuse and neglect proceedings, successions, family partitions, etc. A family lawyer is expected to help a client resolve any issue relating to his/her family. Our staffs are well trained and deal with all aspects of family law. We understand the need to listen to our clients and apply an individualised and customised approach to every case.
How Much Does a Family Lawyer Cost in Toronto?
The cost of hiring a family lawyer in Toronto depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and whether the matter is resolved through mediation or litigation. Some cases, like uncontested divorces, may have flat fees, while others, like contested custody battles, are billed hourly. At Nussbaum Law, we offer transparent pricing and flexible consultation options to fit your needs. Contact us today to discuss your case.
What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?
