Dr. Dinker Belle Rai

About the Author

Dr. Dinker Belle Rai is a Board Certified Indian American vascular surgeon who worked at the Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of the Department of Vascular Surgery/Vascular Laboratory. Born on 28 April 1947, in Puttur, Karnataka, India. His father is a famous criminal lawyer. Dr. Rai received his MBBS degree from Bangalore Medical College and his surgical training in the General Surgery Residency training program at the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and Medical Center of New York. Dr, Dinker was the first to develop a method for retrograde catheterization of the venous tree; along with that, he discovered the motion of venous valves in human beings. Dr. Rai is also an accomplished author. He wrote two chapters in a textbook of Angiology and a beginner's manual on sclerotherapy and management of varicose veins with stab phlebectomy. In addition to being a doctor and an author, Dr. Rai is also a sportsman and an artist. He captained and won for his university team multiple times. His name is on the Honor Roll at the Chinnaswamy Stadium Cricket Museum in Bangalore.

Dr. Dinker B. Rai is credited with developing the first ever method for retrograde catheterization of the venous tree. This invention was given a United States patent in 1988. Based on this patent, a company called The Ideas For Medicine, Inc. (now part of Horizon Medical Products, Inc.) manufactured and still distributes out a series of catheters, known as Rai’s Catheters for use in performing descending phlebographic tests and for venous embolectomies. He is also credited with the discovery of the motion of venous valves in human beings. His original research on histopathological specimens of patients with saphenofemoral – incompetency resulted in a paradigm shift in management of varicose veins. He performed the first ever vein transplantation below the knee. The discovery of right atrial mechanical function is a pivotal discovery in his medical research work. He is an editor for the International Journal of Angiology. Rai has been featured in the book "Jewels of India" for his contributions in the medicine, art, sports and cultural arenas.

The book is a hybrid product, part memoir, part medical history, but mostly about his insights in his field of venous surgery. Some of this work has been previously published, others are validated only partially, and a few more are mere kernels for development by others. The center idea is the author’s concept of Atrial function which was thrust on his consciousness in an accidental way.
