County Championships 2023
The County Championships took place on Saturday 23rd September at Ellesmere Port Sports Village.
Three events were battled out at the weekend, where new faces and old competed in a busy, match filled day. Tightly fought group stages lead ultimately to the finals. Click here to see all the results.

Marjorie Bryce-Smith Trophy 2023
This year the Marjorie Bryce-Smith Trophy was awarded to Ruth Raiswell.
Candidates for this award are submitted by the various Leagues and are voted for by the President, Chairman and Secretary of the County.
The criteria for this award are playing ability, service to the game, sportsmanship, club loyalty and turnout. Ruth exhibits all these qualities in abundance and her involvement at club and League level has been outstanding.
Ruth has, for over 30 years, played at the highest level in the Crewe and District League and continues to represent the County at Master’s level.
She has been a major figure in the rise and continued development of her club, Welsh Row into one of the most successful in the history of the League.
Ruth is a driven and highly motivated person and has spent over 18 years as Fixture Secretary on the Crewe & District League Committee and will always offer a helping hand whenever needed.
Unfortunately, she was unable to attend the AGM to receive her award, but it was kindly presented to her at the League’s fixture meeting by League Chairman David Sumner and Secretary, Brian Horrocks.

Arthur Evans Memorial Trophy 2023
This is a very prestigious award, kindly donated by Jean Evans in memory of her husband Arthur and has been awarded since 1997 in recognition of services to Cheshire Badminton.
The recipient is chosen by the President, Chairman and Secretary and this year the award has been presented to Gavin Simpson.
Gavin, a talented player himself has dedicated his life to coaching our great sport and has for more than 30 years been involved in organising and coaching junior badminton throughout the County.
He has also been involved with Badminton England for many years in a coaching role with several of the junior national squads.
In recent years he has taken on the Chairmanship of our junior county and is actively working to develop and rebuild the junior county structure.
As he was away on holiday at the time of our AGM, our Chairman presented the trophy to him at the recent junior county championships held at David Lloyd, Cheshire Oaks.
Our sincere thanks go to Gavin for all his continued dedication and hard work.
Lifetime Achievement Award
This is a very special award, the first one of its kind in the history of our County, and it goes to William ‘Roger’ Ewing to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible support and leadership for far too many years to remember.
Cheshire would not be as strong and successful as it is today without his dedication and continued guidance as he continues to lead from the front as our President.
Not only a great player himself but he has always shown great enthusiasm and love for the game, and this has shone through, not only at County level but also at Badminton England where he served as a Director for many years.
Cheshire Badminton owe a depth of gratitude to Roger and we thank him for all that he has done for us over the years.
Vice Presidents
We are delighted to advise that at our recent AGM, two additional vice presidents were elected, namely Colin Evans and David Sumner.
Both have been loyal and dedicated servants to Cheshire County, their Clubs and League’s for over 25 years and it is a fitting acknowledgement to their commitment and loyalty.

After a break of 3 years for COVID, the Cheshire County Championships were reinstated for the 22/23 Season.
It was good to see a mixture of new and old faces, including several of the current County 1st Team players.

Wirral Sports Awards 2019 – Congratulations Sue Marcks
Well done to Sue on receiving a Special Recognition award at this year’s prestigious 55th annual Wirral Sports Awards. The ceremony, held at historic Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight on 10th October, was attended by the Mayor of Wirral, councillor Tony Smith, along with other sporting dignitaries and was compered by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Ian Kennedy.
The Wirral Badminton League nominated Sue for her dedication and length of service to the League in her position as Honorary Results Secretary, taking many hours each week to ensure that all League matches are arranged, collecting and checking the results sheets, preparing and validating the divisional tables as well as reporting on match activities, identifying anomalies and taking appropriate action. It turned out to be a nail biting evening for Sue as she was a short listed candidate in the Volunteer of the Year section from her tennis club Alderley. This award was won by Matthew Green from Wirral Country Park Run.
The Wirral Badminton League are a member of the Wirral Sports Forum (who host the awards), a network of sports clubs and associations across Wirral. The League is represented at regular meetings and the Forum host Talk Series events to give clubs help with such things as raising funds, social media etc. If you feel your club has an individual who deserves an award or your Club deserves an award in the Club of the Year category, look out for the 2020 Awards Ceremony information on the Wirral Sports Forum Website or Facebook page:

In Memory of Marion Doe
Marion was the secretary of Congleton Badminton Club for almost 40 years.
Last year she received the Tony Hickson award for services to badminton (Crewe league) and in 2000, she was awarded the Marjorie Bryce Smith Trophy (County).
She ran the Junior section of Congleton Badminton Club for many years giving up her Sunday mornings to encourage young players. She also organised an annual end of season tournament. In recent years she was responsible for a session on a Wednesday evening with coaching from Andy Aspinal, as well as Ladies recreational sessions at Congleton Leisure Centre.
In the lead up to the Olympics Congleton BC were part of an event held in Congleton to try Olympic sports, Marion helped to organise the badminton session.
Marion was truly passsionate about the sport, as well as being similarly involved with the tennis club. Her kindness even extended to providing cards and birthday cakes for many club members over the years.
She will be sorely missed.
