Lymphocyte Traffic Research

"ArtnScience, Beauty and Truth"

What comes first, scientific protocols or images so haunting that they conjure questions requiring answers? I think beauty is what drives us to discover something new. Targeted research makes use of existing knowledge and leads us away from pursuit of beauty by convincing us that technology will bring us to new truths. How can we search for that which we neither know nor can recognize? Is beauty that which leads us to inquire? Or, is ignorance what makes an unexpected finding particularly beautiful. The beauty of an image never seen or imagined before, is what leads some of us to discover. If these aesthetic images from the immune system motivate others to imagine and conjure new ideas in immunology then this web site will become a valuable educational resource for students in the biological sciences.

LINKS to FINE ART WEB SITES and VIRTUAL MUSEUMS

This site also sustains a theme about creativity and the interrelatedness of imagery in Art and Science. The Art theme can be followed by clicking on the hyperlinks to artist's names or questions about their work. e.g. Sandro Botticelli, Adolphe- William Bouguereau, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Buonarroti, Paul Cezanne, and Salvador Dali. Here's a page by an "ArtnScientist", Hunter O'Reilly, whose paintings I first saw on the cover of a molecular biology journal that bore her publication. Another "scientific" artist is Chuck Close who created a new dimension of portrait art. His immense photorealist paintings of friends were made with multitudes of small graphics that presaged pixels used in computer images.

You can find answers to the questions [#1. "What do Art and Science have in common?"; #2. "When is Art Science?"; and, #3. "Can you see similarities in the way Cezanne perceived 'The Bathers' and 'Still Life with Fruit'.?"

Here is a list of Art Museums with excellent content you can access via the WWW: The National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C; The Louvre Museum, Paris; Fine Art Resources on the Internet; Carol Gerten's Virtual Art Museum; Mark Harden's Art-chive; Rodin Museum, Paris; The Complete Van Gogh Collection and, last but not least, the wonderful Webmuseum Bienvenue! from Nicolas Pioch. Also, you must see the sculptures of Auguste Rodin on exhibit in Venice and those by Gustav Vigeland that are in Frogner Park in Oslo Norway.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT ART

Art Anderson is a senior scientist, pathologist and ethicist. Presently, his most important responsibility is the protection of the rights and welfare of human volunteer subjects through the Office of Human Use and Ethics.

In recognition of 28 years of assuring ethical research involving humans, Wagner College awarded Art the degree of Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa on 16 May 2003

If you want to hear Art talk about human subjects, listen to Joanne Silberner's "All things considered" presentation on "Operation Whitecoat." (click on the hotlink, then click on "Project Whitecoat" when you get to the NPR Archives. You may need a RealAudio player.)

Did you see Philip Hilts' article on Jonathan Moreno's new book in The New York Times? Read about what I do in chapters 8 & 9 of "Undue Risk: Secret State Experiments on Humans". The heroism of Operation Whitecoat volunteers was included in "Dangerous Missions: Human Guinea Pigs" a program that aired on the History Channel in August 2000. Unfortunately, you can no longer get the video for your IRB Education program from the A&E Store.

"Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earth's beauty, who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves."
