Dean Realty Co. was founded in 1958 by Lester M. Dean, Sr., then president of Dean Machinery Co. With heavy equipment available to move the earth and build infrastructure, the commercial real estate entrepreneur broke ground in the late 1950s and early 1960s with two large-scale projects. Dean’s Downtown Business Park, comprised of 16 buildings, offers 456,000 square feet of office and industrial space just south of Kansas City’s Downtown loop at 31st and Mercier/Terrace Streets. Also off 31st Street, Dean’s Downtown Underground, a converted 1.2 million square foot mine, offers office, warehouse and storage space. Dean’s Downtown Underground is the first subterranean development of its kind in America. From the late 1970s through 2008, Cambridge Business Park evolved into seven business centers, two office buildings and a high-tech industrial center serving metro businesses with over 416,000 square feet of space.
