Frequently Asked Question of the Day:
Question: How
do i get my acrylic paint to be brighter, more luminous and colorful
like oils after it dries?
Answer: When
acrylic paint is wet it reflects light but once dried, the reflection
of light from your acrylic painting lessens. This makes the color
look dull. Acrylic paints by nature are duller and less vibrant than
oils. Oil paints are brighter because oils have a high oil to pigment
ratio which makes them appear more luminous. To make your acrylic
paintings brighter use the highest quality acrylic paint possible for
your painting. Most Artist Grade acrylic paints come with a higher
pigment to binder ratio than student grade paints, making them
brighter and more vibrant. Student grade paints are OK for practice
but their lower price is usually achieved by using less pigment.
Another way to make your acrylic paints brighter and more luminous
is to add a Gloss Medium to your paint. Using gloss medium in your
acrylic paint can help brighten up the colors of your painting but
beware that a glossy finish can add a glare to the painting when
light hits the glossy
paint. Liquitex Gloss Gell is a
popular choice for artists that use a gloss medium.
It can increase the brilliance of acrylic paints without changing the
thickness of the paint when used with high-quality Artist Grade
acrylics. Some high quality Acrylic paint brands include Liquitex
Professional Heavy Body Acrylic Paints, Golden Heavy Body Artist
Acrylic Paints, Holbein Heavy Body Artist Acrylic Paints, Winsor &
Newton Professional Acrylic Paints.
